Module 1 provides a course overview and introduces e-portfolios and reflective writing. The FYEC comprises six modules and uses journal writing and an electronic portfolio as its primary assessment strategies.

First FYEC 100 Online Session

I enjoyed the first online class. The lecturer made it feel very welcoming, and I enjoyed the conversations. I was at work, so I couldn't stay for long. I felt disappointed that I couldn't spend more time in the session.

My reflection
Module 1 covered the use and importance of journal reflection and the e-portfolio. It briefly outlined the other modules we will later cover in this course.
At first, the module didn't stand out to me because I thought I already understood the topic of journal reflection, and because I already use portfolios in my daily work. However, after reading it over and giving it some deeper thought, I was able to clearly understand what was being asked of me. I had been thinking that portfolios were mainly for showcasing pieces. I saw the journal as a place to explain how I got to the final product. Now I understand that perfection is not being asked of me in the beginning; thoughtful reflection is. This module wants me to analyze how I learn, how I make sense of what I learn, and how I apply it in my daily life. It is seeking to challenge me to be honest about my progress and document it each step of the way so that, on graduation day, I can look back and see how far I have really come.
Understanding this, I have chosen to adopt this approach in all my courses, so what I learn becomes a part of my daily life and not just another completed course.
